Iridium is a naturally occurring chemical element with the symbol Ir and atomic number 77. It belongs to the platinum family of metals and is known for being extremely rare, remarkably dense, and highly resistant to corrosion.

It is difficult to melt, shape, or destroy. Because it can withstand intense heat, chemical exposure, pressure, and demanding conditions, iridium is used when ordinary materials may not be strong enough.

Iridium Beneath the Surface

Iridium is one of the rarest elements found in Earth’s crust—but that does not mean the planet contains very little of it.

Iridium is considered an “iron-loving” element. When the early Earth was still forming and its materials were separating, much of its iridium moved with iron toward the planet’s interior. Scientists believe a significant amount remains deep beneath the surface, helping explain why so little is easily found in the crust.
